All humans have deep mechanisms to avoid substantive change … to preserve homeostasis. We are (unconsciously) terrified that our skills and resources may not be a good fit in new circumstances. So we’ve carefully constructed lives where we feel adequate to the task at hand … that feels familiar to us and we don’t want it to change.
On of my favorite expressions is:
You cannot talk someone out of a position they have FELT their way into
Talk is cheap … leaving actually DOES disrupt the system and it’s avoiding this disruption that motivates most people.
